The re-trial of a 83-year-old ill-prisoner in Turkey continues, yet he was still not released despite serious health problems he suffers from, according to Mesopotamia Agency (MA).
According to the Human Rights Association of Turkey, there are 1,333 sick prisoners in Turkey’s jails. It reports that 457 of them are seriously ill and most of them are political prisoners. One of those seriously ill-prisoners is Özkan, who is 83 years old. He was sentenced to prison for life on the grounds of the murder of Bahtiyar Aydın, Diyarbakır Gendarmerie Regional Commander on October 22, 1993, which took place in Lice district of Diyarbakır (Amed).
The hearing of the case 83-year-old seriously ill-prisoner Mehmet Emin Özkan was held in Adana 7th High Criminal Court. Özkan could not attend the hearing of the case due to health problems. His lawyer explained Özkan’s state of health to the court. Özkan’s lawyer stated that although the retrial has been going on for six years, no decision of release was given by the court. The lawyers once again demanded Özkan’s release due to his health condition. The court committee rejected the lawyers’ request. The court postponed the next hearing until 6 May.
