The internationally acclaimed German singer-songwriter Konstantin Wecker’s music video titled ‘Schäm dich Europa’ (Shame on Europe) will be screened with Kurdish subtitles at the International Kurdish Cultural Festival in Frankfurt this Saturday.
Wecker, in collaboration with Nobel Prize-winning author Elfriede Jelinek, has taken on the official sponsorship of the festival. The duo has penned a joint statement in honour of the International Day of Peace on 1 September. This statement, initially published in the German weekly newspaper ‘der Freitag’ and distributed online in Kurdish and Turkish, expresses solidarity with the ongoing International Kurdish Cultural Festival in Frankfurt.
Their statement will be delivered at the festival prior to the screening of the music video.
“A better life for everyone in our world is possible – to dream about it, to write about it, to sing about it, to insist on it and to commit to it together, that is what we all want to do individually and together: today, here at the Kurdish Cultural Festival in Frankfurt, and everywhere and every day worldwide,” the call reads.
In their call, Jelinek and Wecker also address “the German government, the German corporations and the German arms industry,” which “to this day support the criminal and racist Erdoğan regime.”
Tens of thousands of people from several European countries are expected at the Kurdish cultural festival in Rebstockpark in Frankfurt.
