“This is absolutely good news,” said Nacho Sánchez Amor, the European Parliament’s Turkey rapporteur, in an interview with Erem Kansoy of Medya News on Monday, describing recent developments on the Kurdish question as a major opportunity for a political resolution. He emphasised that the process must take place within Turkey’s constitutional framework.
Amor highlighted the significance of the latest discussions, stating, “It’s another opportunity for the country to engage again in a political process that finally could drive towards a peaceful solution.” However, he stressed that the dialogue must focus on Turkey’s internal Kurdish question rather than broader regional dynamics involving Kurdish communities in Iraq and Syria.
His remarks come amid renewed political attention on the conflict, which has persisted for decades. He acknowledged that the process would be long but underlined the importance of taking the first step. “The first step is a big step,” he noted.
Amor also compared the situation to Spain’s past conflicts, pointing out that a complete ceasefire and dismantling of armed organisations were not immediate demands in Spain’s case. “We didn’t have in Spain this clear blatant calling for a complete cease of violence and for the dismantling of the organisation. And for that reason, this is an enormous step,” he said, referring to ongoing discussions on the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
He also praised Abdullah Öcalan’s ability to make a political statement despite his isolation. “It’s not easy, talking from a very strict prison regulation, to be able to have a look at society in the way that has been done in the Öcalan statement,” he said. Amor’s remarks reflect the cautious optimism surrounding the potential for renewed dialogue on Turkey’s long-standing Kurdish question.
