Senior Kurdish politicians met in Iraq’s Kurdistan Region on Tuesday, as a delegation from Turkey’s pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Equality and Democracy (DEM) Party held discussions with key figures of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK). The 75-minute closed-door meeting with PUK leader Bafel Talabani and Kurdistan Region Deputy Prime Minister Kubad Talabani concluded without an official statement, leaving the content of their talks undisclosed.
The meeting took place at Debashan, the historic residence of the late PUK founder Jalal Talabani, in Sulaymaniyah (Silêmanî). It followed earlier political engagements by the DEM Party delegation in Erbil (Hewlêr), the administrative capital of the Kurdistan Region.

While no details have emerged, the talks are believed to have focused on regional political dynamics, Kurdish unity, and the ongoing isolation of Abdullah Öcalan, the jailed leader of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
The delegation is going to continue its programme in Sulaymaniyah, with plans to meet Şanaz Ibrahim Ahmed, a senior member of the PUK’s leadership. Additionally, the group is likely to visit Jalal Talabani’s gravesite, a symbolic gesture reaffirming historical political relationships.
This high-level meeting comes amid a critical juncture, as Öcalan’s latest initiative aims to steer the Kurdish political movement towards a renewed process of dialogue. The delegation has been engaging with key stakeholders, including Kurdish parties in Iraq, to build consensus around a potential new phase of negotiations with Turkey.
Observers are now awaiting statements from both sides to clarify the meeting’s implications for intra-Kurdish diplomacy and the broader political landscape in the region.
