More information has been received from an official of the Peoples’ Equality and Democracy (DEM) Party about the second four-hour meeting between DEM deputies Pervin Buldan and Sırrı Süreyya Önder and Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan, which took place in İmralı Island Prison on 22 January 2025.
In a statement released today, the DEM delegation gave an overview of the meeting and said: “This process will facilitate coexistence and freedom for all. The valuable contributions of all segments of society are eagerly anticipated in the hope that this will be realised”. The statement emphasised Öcalan’s involvement in shaping the process and the delegation’s commitment to continued engagement.
According to the Mezopotamya agency, DEM Party officials provided additional details about the meeting, highlighting Öcalan’s perspective on the discussions. He described the ongoing efforts as “very valuable” and stressed the importance of success, saying “this time we must succeed”. Öcalan also called for positive contributions from all segments of society and stressed the potential of the process to achieve coexistence and freedom for all.
Regarding the tragic fire in Bolu that claimed 79 lives, Öcalan expressed his sorrow and condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the injured. According to the official, Öcalan suggested refraining from making a comprehensive public statement at this time out of respect for the tragedy and the declared national mourning.
The DEM official added that further details of the meeting would be released to the public as necessary. The delegation, meanwhile, will intensify its consultations and activities in the coming days to take the initiative forward.
