The Democratic Union Party (PYD) has called for democratic self-administration as the solution to the Syrian conflict, during its 10th Congress held on Saturday in Al Hasakah (Hesekê), with 700 delegates in attendance.
Party Co-chair Salih Muslim said that despite the difficulties faced since 2003, the PYD remains committed to leading the region’s democratic struggle. “We have led the region’s people and continue to uphold the sacrifices of our martyrs,” he said.
Muslim highlighted the teachings of Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan, explaining that his philosophy of democratic self-administration and the brotherhood of peoples is central to resolving conflicts in the region. “This idea, which illuminates the way for all peoples, remains the key to solving all problems,” he added.
Focusing on the conflict in Syria, Muslim stressed that the PYD’s goal has been to improve living conditions for all communities affected by the 13-year war. “Our party’s vision has emerged as the vanguard of the Syrian revolution, and we are committed to ensuring that all of our gains benefit the people,” he explained.
He also reiterated the party’s commitment to Kurdish unity, noting that the PYD has held numerous meetings with Kurdish parties to foster dialogue. “We continue our efforts to establish unity among Kurdish parties and work towards a common vision,” he stated.
Co-chair Asya Abdullah echoed these sentiments, stressing the importance of Kurdish unity and the need to liberate occupied territories such as Afrin (Efrîn), Tell Abyad (Girê Spî) and Ras al-Ayn (Serêkaniyê). “There can be no solution without the liberation of our lands and the unity of Syrian territory,” she said.
Abdullah also addressed the ongoing isolation of Öcalan, pledging that the PYD will continue to fight for his physical freedom and for the resolution of the Kurdish question. “We will develop our struggle in all areas to achieve these goals,” she concluded.
The Congress also featured a visual presentation of the PYD’s activities and achievements over the years.
