The International Kurdish Culture Festival commenced in Frankfurt on Saturday, attracting thousands from across Europe who gathered to celebrate Kurdish culture and advocate for the freedom of Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan.
The festival’s theme, “Let’s break the isolation and occupation, let’s free Leader Öcalan”, resonated throughout the event, reflecting the Kurdish community’s ongoing struggles.
From early morning, attendees donned national attire as they passed through security barriers to enter the festival grounds. Chanting slogans such as “Biji Serok Apo” (Long Live Öcalan) and “Jin, Jiyan, Azadi” (Woman, Life, Freedom) the crowd demonstrated solidarity and determination in their cause. Various stalls showcasing Kurdish culture and history, including a miniature titled “Gundê Kurdan” created by artist Amel, drew significant interest.
The festival featured traditional dance, with the Mesopotamian Democratic Movement for Culture and Arts (TEV ÇAND) group leading participants in the govend [traditional Kurdish dance], further enriching the cultural experience. Kurdish authors also engaged with readers at book stalls, fostering a sense of community.
A designated area for children, “Zarok Ma”, attracted families with activities and games presented in Kurdish, ensuring a welcoming atmosphere for younger attendees. Additionally, photographs of politicians convicted in the Kobanê case were displayed at one of the stands, highlighting ongoing political issues.
The event commenced with the national anthem “Ey Raqîp” and a moment of silence, setting a respectful tone. Zübeyde Zümrüt, co-chair of the European Kurdish Democratic Societies Congress (KCDK-E), emphasised the significance of the festival in connection with the anniversary of an international conspiracy against Abdullah Öcalan, stating, “Kurdish people are resisting against genocidal policies everywhere. This struggle will ensure the success of leader Öcalan’s freedom campaign.”
Zümrüt called for participation in the upcoming demonstration and march in Cologne on 16 November, part of the campaign for Öcalan’s freedom and a political resolution to the Kurdish issue. Co-chair Engin Sever reaffirmed their commitment, stating, “We will win this struggle”.
The festival concluded with a performance by the RASTAK group, celebrating Kurdish music and culture, further highlighting the event’s festive spirit.
