Tuncer Bakırhan, co-chair of the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Equality and Democracy (DEM) Party, delivered a powerful speech in the Turkish Parliament, addressing pressing national issues with a particular focus on the right to hope, the urgent need for peace and democracy, and the harsh economic conditions in Turkey.
Bakırhan began by recalling Abdullah Öcalan’s call for peace, noting that 40 days had passed since it was issued on 27 February. He reminded the parliament and the public of Öcalan’s vision for a peaceful and democratic future. “It is time to place the right to hope at the top of our political agenda,” he said, emphasising that this right, key to Öcalan’s release, is a crucial foundation for peace and securing his leading role in a sustainable peace process.
The co-chair argued that the government’s failure to make meaningful progress on peace undermines public confidence and prolongs suffering. “Peace is not just a concept to be discussed; it is an urgent necessity,” he added, stressing that the delay in taking concrete action is deeply troubling.
Bakırhan further questioned the ongoing delay despite the government’s stated commitment to peace, asking, “How can the Kurdish people and workers believe in a peaceful solution if these steps are delayed?” He condemned the continued isolation of Öcalan, stating that peace cannot be achieved unless his imprisonment and isolation are addressed. Bakırhan urged the government to act immediately to end Öcalan’s isolation and take concrete steps toward peace. He stressed that a true commitment to peace requires breaking the silence surrounding Öcalan and initiating meaningful dialogue.
Bakırhan also criticised Turkey’s anti-terror laws, which he claimed are being used to suppress freedom of expression and political opposition. He called for urgent reform of these laws, stating, “We need laws that promote freedom and democracy, not those that suppress them.” He argued that political expression and peaceful protest should never be criminalised and emphasised that Turkey’s legal framework must reflect democratic values.
The DEM Party co-chair condemned the government’s handling of Turkey’s economic and political situation, asserting, “The government has driven the Turkish economy into crisis for political gain.” He pointed to rising inflation and the financial hardships faced by millions, especially pensioners, workers, and the poor, criticizing the government for failing to effectively address these issues. “While ordinary citizens face escalating hardships, the government focuses on preserving its political power and neglects the real needs of the people,” Bakırhan argued.
In his closing remarks, Bakırhan reaffirmed the DEM Party’s commitment to democratic reform and peace. He stressed that Turkey is at a critical juncture in its history and must make urgent decisions to ensure that the country’s future is based on peace, justice, and freedom. “We are ready to work together to create a system that reflects the will of the people, one rooted in democracy, justice, and freedom,” Bakırhan concluded.
