Twenty-six charred bodies, including those of Kurdish refugees, were discovered amid the untamed wildfires in Greece’s Evros region on Tuesday. The authorities located the remains near an Alexandroupoli barracks, a location close to the borders of Turkey and Bulgaria.
“The fire in the forested area of Greece’s Evros region continues. 26 burned bodies were found in the fire area, including Kurdish refugees. 250 refugees are reported to be trapped in the fire area,” Kurdish journalist Amed Dicle shared on Wednesday morning on Twitter.
Ioannis Artopios, a spokesperson for the fire department, acknowledged the possibility that the blaze victims might be refugees from Turkey.
In a parallel plight, a refugee solidarity organisation known as “alarm phone” reported that nearly 250 refugees are stranded on islands near the Turkish border. Their precarious situation is captured in a video, shared alongside their urgent plea, “The fires are getting very close to us now. We need help as soon as possible!”
Meanwhile, evacuations are underway in the towns of Komotini and neighbouring villages in Western Thrace’s Rhodope province. On Tuesday, Siderades (Demircili), Stilario (Baraklı) and Gratini (Ircanhisar) were evacuated.
