A joint security operation conducted on the outskirts of North and East Syria’s Al-Hasakah by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ), and the Internal Security Forces has yielded significant results in the fight against ISIS.
Up to 40 suspected ISIS members were arrested in the 21 April operation, launched in response to intelligence reports indicating the presence of ISIS sleeper cells in the area. A cache of weapons and ammunition was seized during the operation which the captured suspects were planning to use for terrorist acts against the city’s residents, according to the SDF’s Media Centre.

Top Syrian-Kurdish commander Mazloum Abdi recently warned that a resurgence of the Islamic State (ISIS) was imminent as the extremist group takes advantage of heightened security issues in the Middle East, coupled with a growing population of radicals emerging from refugee camps in the region.
In light of these developments, the Kurdish-led SDF Syrian Democratic Forces reiterated a commitment to combating ISIS and protecting the region from terrorist threats. They pledged to continue their precise and focused security operations against ISIS remnants until the complete elimination of the terrorist organisation.
The outcome of this joint security operation serves as a reminder of the persistent threat posed by ISIS and the ongoing efforts required to counter it, the media centre announced, calling on the international community to fulfil its security, humanitarian, and judicial responsibilities in addressing the threat of terrorism in the region.
Moreover, the United States must commit to “meaningful engagement” with the Autonomous Administration of Northeast Syria (AANES) and support the US-allied local forces in their fight against ISIS, Commander Abdi said in a recent interview.
