In Frankfurt, Germany, a significant event marked the celebration of Newroz, the Kurdish New Year, organised by the Confederation of Kurdistan Communities of Germany (KON-MED).
This year’s celebration, which highlighted the demands for the freedom of Abdullah Öcalan, the imprisoned leader of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), and for a political solution to the Kurdish question, took place in the Rebstockpark and attracted tens of thousands of people from different German states.
The meeting was not only a cultural celebration but also a political rally where posters of Öcalan and historical Kurdish figures were prominently displayed. The participants wore national dress and carried flags representing different Kurdish factions, showing a strong sense of Kurdish identity and resistance.
The event began with a minute’s silence, followed by speeches by KON-MED Co-presidents Ruken Akça and Kerem Gök. They spoke about the importance of Öcalan’s freedom and the expansion of the Kurdish struggle. They called on the German government to end its cooperation with the government of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and highlighted the unresolved Kurdish question.
The Kurdistan Communities Union (KCK) also sent a message to the Frankfurt Newroz, reiterating the importance of Newroz as a symbol of resistance against oppression and celebrating the support for Kurdish freedom and democracy worldwide. The message underlined the continuous struggle of the Kurdish people for freedom and dignity, symbolised by the Newroz fire, which represents a defiance against tyranny historically and in the contemporary struggle for Kurdish rights.
