This week, in response to the catastrophe of the earthquake, I have taken a break from my usual news review to write three separate articles on different aspects of this overpowering story. But for those who have come to expect a weekly podcast, I have also made an audio recording of all three.
In the first two pieces, I have tried to understand what is happening through looking at broader debates about disaster preparedness and response. The third piece pulls together the many disjointed news stories from Syria, and especially from North and East Syria, to look at the evolving situation in this divided country.
Links to the written articles are given below.
Scapegoats and fall guys in the earthquake zone (Tuesday 14 February)
Disasters and dictators (Thursday 16 February)
Land of borders and barriers: helping Syria’s earthquake survivors (Saturday 18 February)
