A Turkish opposition politician has called for 2025 to be declared the “Sırrı Süreyya Önder Peace Year” in recognition of the late activist and politician’s lifelong dedication to peace and democracy. İnan Akgün Alp, a member of Turkey’s main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) representing Kars (Qers), made the proposal following Önder’s recent passing.
Alp announced the initiative on his X account on 3 May, emphasising Önder’s significant role in advocating for reconciliation and democratic values in Turkey. Önder, a prominent figure in Turkish and Kurdish politics, was known for his efforts to bridge divides in a country marked by decades of conflict, particularly between the Turkish state and Kurdish communities.
“Sırrı Süreyya Önder’s words, labour, conscience and courage resonate as a call in our country’s collective conscience,” Alp stated. He urged that naming 2025 after Önder would serve as a turning point for uniting democratic groups in renewed peace efforts.
Önder’s death has prompted widespread tributes, with many recalling his work as a filmmaker, politician and peace advocate. His funeral arrangements began on 4 May, with his body released from hospital for burial, according to local reports. Alp expressed condolences to Önder’s family and supporters, describing the loss as a shared debt to continue his peace mission.
