Syria: US mediation extends ceasefire between Turkey and Kurdish forces

A ceasefire between Turkey and the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in northern Syria has been extended until the end of this week, according to US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller. This development, announced on 17 December, follows Washington’s mediation efforts amid escalating clashes in the region.

The recent ceasefire, brokered by the United States last week, aimed to curb hostilities near key areas, including Manbij (Minbîc) and Kobani (Kobanê), where tensions have increased. At a press briefing, Miller highlighted the US’s ongoing efforts to engage with both Turkey and the Kurdish-led SDF, stressing the need for long-term stability. “We don’t want to see any party take advantage of the current unstable situation to advance their own narrow interests at the expense of the broader Syrian national interest,” he said.

Turkey’s approach undermines truce efforts in Syria: SDF

SDF General Commander Mazloum Abdi affirmed the group’s willingness to facilitate a peaceful resolution. Abdi proposed the creation of a demilitarised zone in Kobani under US supervision, addressing Turkey’s stated security concerns while maintaining regional stability. “Dialogue, not aggression, is the only path forward to peace and stability,” Abdi reiterated in a statement.

But tensions still persist. SDF spokesperson Farhad Shami spoke of Turkey’s “insistence on war” during negotiations over strategic sites such as the Qara Quzak (Qere Qozaq) Bridge, Tishreen Dam, and Manbij itself. Shami said that Turkish-backed forces aim to expand their presence across northern Syria, warning of preparations for further offensives. “Our decision is clear: We will defend our land and people against all aggression,” he declared, calling on local communities to remain united.

Clashes have continued in parts of northern Syria despite the truce. Turkish-backed forces reportedly targeted areas south of Kobani on Tuesday, signalling ongoing hostilities. The SDF emphasised its determination to resist in the face of aggression, while calling for international support to secure a comprehensive ceasefire.

Efforts to stabilise the region remain fragile as the ceasefire approaches its extended deadline, with renewed aggression from Turkey threatening further escalation and occupation of the area.
