Thunberg also paid a solidarity visit to Açık Radyo after Turkey’s Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) revoked the station’s broadcast licence. The Swedish climate activist met with the station’s founder, Ömer Madra, and expressed her support, saying, “Açık Radyo must stay open!” Thunberg stressed the importance of honest media platforms that address climate change and human rights.
Açık Radyo’s licence was revoked in July following multiple penalties from RTÜK, citing a reference to the Armenian Genocide made by a guest during a news programme. Despite legal challenges, the station’s broadcast licence was officially cancelled on 11 October 2024.
