The ‘Freedom of Abdullah Öcalan: A Political Solution to the Kurdish Question’ campaign has announced ‘Free Öcalan Global Days’, a series of international events from 1-10 October, aimed at raising awareness about the continued isolation imposed on the Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan, imprisoned in Turkey since 1999, and advocating for a political solution to the Kurdish question.
This initiative marks the one-year anniversary of the campaign, which launched on 10 October 2023 in Strasbourg, France. Events will take place across 20 countries, including the UK, Germany, South Africa, Indonesia, Colombia and others. The programme includes press conferences, seminars and public discussions designed to engage the international community in dialogue about Öcalan’s rights and the broader struggle for human rights in Turkey.
The campaign highlights Öcalan’s total isolation by the Turkish state, now exceeding three and a half years, as well as a letter signed by 69 Nobel Laureates calling for his release. Freedom for Öcalan, leader of the Kurdish movement, is viewed by supporters as essential to peace and democracy in the Middle East.
The campaign press release invited participants to explore how Öcalan’s ideas can “serve as a blueprint for peace and democracy in the Middle East” and stated that Turkey’s continued isolation policy, which runs contrary to international law, has a far-reaching impact on human rights worldwide.
