Syria’s delegation walked out of the Arab League summit in Cairo on Tuesday during the speech of Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, in protest of Turkey’s actions in Syria. This marks the first time in 13 years that Turkey has attended the summit, aiming to normalise relations with its regional neighbours.
The protest by the Syrian delegation reignited debates among Arab League members regarding Turkey’s influence and military presence in the region. Fidan’s participation at the summit followed Turkey’s recent efforts to rebuild diplomatic ties, including with Syria, which regained full membership in the Arab League last year.
Despite Turkey’s efforts, tensions remain high due to its military activities in Syria and other Arab countries. Syrian representatives object to Turkey’s role in occupying parts of their country, leading to their walkout. This incident comes amidst broader regional dynamics, where countries like Egypt have also taken steps towards reconciliation with Turkey, including the dissolution of a committee investigating Turkey’s alleged interventions in Arab states.
