The main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) will send a delegation to Hakkari to protest the government’s decision to remove the elected Kurdish mayor from office and appoint a state trustee. Özgür Özel, CHP’s new leader, is taking a strong stance against President Erdoğan’s undemocratic practices.
CHP spokesperson Deniz Yücel also criticised the government’s actions, calling the appointment of a trustee “an act of intolerance towards democracy.” He added, “This action ignores the presumption of innocence and unjustly labels an elected mayor as guilty without a definitive judicial decision. We stand firmly with the people of Hakkari and against this anti-democratic practice.”
The CHP delegation to Hakkari, including General Vice President Zeliha Aksaz Şahbaz and MPs Cavit Ari and Kayıhan Pala, aims to investigate this undemocratic practice and inform the public.
