Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Commander Mazloum Abdi has publicly denounced the Iranian proxy attack on American forces near the Syrian border in northeast Jordan, which killed three US personnel on Sunday.
“We condemn the attack that targeted an American base in Jordan… We deeply value and reaffirm our partnership in fighting against terrorism,” Abdi said, in a statement shared on X, formerly Twitter.
The Syrian-Kurdish forces are affiliated with the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (DAANES), and have long been in partnership with US forces positioned in northern Syria as part of the Global Coalition against Da’esh (ISIS), with the local forces leading the defence.
The commander also referred in his post to the potential of regional conflict escalating out of control alongside Israel’s continued war in the Gaza strip, ongoing since Hamas attacked the country on 7 October.
He strongly rejected “any attempt to destabilise or spread conflict in the region” and confirmed that the SDF were working on security in order to build “safe areas” in northern Syria.
Adbi further offered condolences to the families of the bereaved, and a speedy recovery to the dozens wounded.
US Central Command said that the attack took place at Tower 22 within the Jordanian Defence Network logistics support base, which is currently home to around 350 US personnel whose mission is to provide support functions for the Global Coalition’s anti-ISIS operations.
