Kerem Schamberger, a German academic, revealed the German government’s lack of response to the ongoing death threats he is facing in a social media post on Wednesday.
Schamberger revealed that he and others have received death threats from an individual who resides in Turkey. This individual, identified as Tayfun K., is believed to be known to the authorities, yet remains unimpeded by significant legal or restrictive measures.
The academic highlighted the close ties between German politicians and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan as he mentioned the apparent negligence in tackling these particular threats. He pointed out that the German authorities have not confirmed whether Tayfun K. has recently entered Germany. Moreover, Schamberger emphasised that even if Tayfun K. were to enter Germany, it seems he would not face immediate repercussions, notwithstanding his history of threats.
The German government’s lack of action extends to not imposing an entry ban on Tayfun K., a step that could potentially hinder his entry into Germany.
Others reportedly endangered by these threats include Civan Akbulut, Sarya Ataç, and Cansu Özdemir, along with several unnamed individuals.
A reading of a book co-authored by Schamberger and Alexander Glasner-Hummel, ‘Escaped. Forbidden. Excluded – How the Kurdish Diaspora in Germany is Being Silenced’, initially scheduled for Tuesday 28 November, was recently cancelled in Mannheim, citing safety concerns. The Turkish Consulate in Germany is accused of exerting significant pressure on the event venue, leading to its cancellation.
