Seyit Evran, a veteran Kurdish journalist and writer who recently passed away while receiving treatment in North and East Syria, will be buried in a mass ceremony in Qamishli (Qamişlo) tomorrow at 11:00 am local time. The funeral procession will proceed to Martyr Delil Saruxan Memorial Cemetery, where he will be interred.
Seyit Evran was a prominent figure in the Kurdish journalistic community, described as “a revolutionary” by his colleague Aziz Köylüoğlu. Evran had a career spanning over 30 years, covering various regions in the Middle East, particularly the four parts of Kurdistan.
A message Evran wrote for Abdullah Öcalan, the jailed leader of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), was also published by Hawar News Agency (ANHA). In the message, penned on 17 January 2022, Evran expressed his revolutionary sentiments and the joy he felt being part of the movement.
Meanwhile, in Diyarbakir (Amed), the Turkish police seized the keys to the Central Mourning House in Hani (Hênê) district, preventing Evran’s family from holding a three-day mourning ceremony. The family was told that they could only mourn with immediate family members, leading them to set up a mourning area in front of their home.
The funeral in Qamishli is expected to draw a large crowd, honouring a man who was not only a journalist but also a significant voice for the Kurdish community.
