Nine Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) fighters from the Anti-Terrorism Units (YAT) lost their lives on 15 March after two helicopters crashed due to bad weather conditions in the northern city of Dohuk in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI), the SDF Media Centre announced on Friday.
The media centre said that the two helicopters that were carrying the YAT fighters were on their way to Suleymaniyah (Silêmanî) in KRI to share security and military information. Among the dead is the unit’s commander, Shervan Kobani.
“The Anti-Terrorist Forces lost their most skilled fighters and commanders in the fight against terrorism, engaging in fierce battles from Kobanê to Raqqa and Derezor. These forces have received advanced training in warfare tactics and they are a key partner of the global coalition in the war against the Islamic State (ISIS). They are diligently working towards enhancing their combat and technical capabilities while reinforcing collaborative mechanisms with the different forces engaged in the conflict in the region,” the statement follows.
The SDF urged the authorities of the KRI to reclaim the bodies of the fighters so that they can be buried in North and East Syria according to their values and traditions.
