Moscow-brokered negotiations towards a rapprochement between Ankara and Damascus are expected to resume with Iran’s participation, said Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov. Turkish and Syrian officials met in Moscow in December, before the twin earthquakes hit Turkey’s south and Syria’s north causing large-scale damage and claiming the lives of over 50,000 people.
Members of the PKK Kurdistan freedom movement living in Sweden are a central issue in talks between Ankara and Stockholm over the Nordic country’s bid for NATO membership. PKK condemned Sweden’s chief negotiator Oscar Stenström of fabricating accusations against the group.
A scandal broke out over the weekend when it was reported that the Turkish Red Crescent’s tent manufacturer had made a sale worth TL 46 million to a charity on the third day after the seismic shock.
In other news, fury at the Turkish government’s failure to provide adequate disaster relief to earthquake victims rang out over the stands of one of Turkey’s three top-tier football teams, Fenerbahçe, on Saturday.
