A racist group of around 30 people attacked three Kurdish students at the campus of Akdeniz University on 22 February, Mezopotamya News Agency (MA) reported.
After the incident, Antalya Free Student Initiative made a statement emphasising that “the assailants have photographs taken with university officials”, and “the administration have a role in the attack,” they claimed, according to Yeni Yaşam Newspaper.
“The assailants have relations with university officials”
Antalya Free Student Initiative pointed out that one of the assailants, Mehmet Çam has photographs of him in a meeting with the Akdeniz Private Security Manager.
“The group enter comfortably with assault weapons such as sticks and knives. It proves that the racist mob attack has relations with university officials. The university administration paves the way for all kinds of activities of these gangs on campus.”
“Kurdish students were attacked because of their culture, language and identity. This is a hate crime that will not go unpunished. We will not take a step back against these racist attacks against Kurdish students.We will follow the case.We want these assailants to be detained immediately and to not be protected.”
Fevzi Aka, one of the students who was a victim of the racist attack, said “Yesterday we were three, they were 30. We couldn’t resist against them. Because those who attacked us had knives and sticks. They can walk freely in front of the rectorate and the security guards. We know that all of our friends are under threat. We know that these racist attacks get their power from the university administration.”
