Republican People’s Party (CHP) İstanbul Deputy and Deputy Chairman of the Parliamentary Human Rights Inquiry Commission, Sezgin Tanrıkulu, announced a report on “Rights Violations of the AKP Government”, detailing a host of violations during the Justice and Development Party’s time in power.
According to Mesopotamia Agency’s (MA) report, the report covers the time between 2002-2020 (the period of AKP rule) and reveals that justice and equality are still a big problem in Turkey and have only deepened with the pandemic.
According to the report, there have been at least 43,780 human rights violations in Turkey during that time, and 3,396 of them were violations of children’s rights. As many as 27,493 people were tortured and 808 journalists were arrested in the 18-year period.
The report also reveals that 112 people lost their lives as a result of hate crimes, 6,721 women were murdered by men, 26,407 people died as a result of occupational homicide, and 2,380 died while they were in prison because of administrative shortcomings.
781 refugees died in transit
Elsewhere the report shows that 305 people died as a result of landmine explosions, 1,662 were killed for disobeying warnings by the police or gendarmerie, 781 refugees died while they were in transit and 86 people died while under custody. Thirty people died while on a hunger strike protest.
According to the report, the total number of curfews between August 2015 and January 2020 is 381. Between August 2015 and August 2016, 321 people lost their lives during the curfews.
CHP deputy Sezgin Tanrıkulu drew attention to the pandemic period in his report and spoke of the health workers and motor couriers who lost their lives during the pandemic. “We respectfully commemorate 361 healthcare workers who died while serving during the pandemic, and 160 motor couriers / service personnel who lost their lives on the roads while serving people who were locked in their homes”, he said.
