In the historic city of Urfa (Riha), Turkey, thousands gathered on Saturday for a grand celebration of Newroz, the Kurdish festival of freedom and resistance. The event, steeped in cultural significance and political expression, showcased the indomitable spirit of the Kurdish community through traditional dances, vibrant performances and resonant slogans.
The theme of this year’s Newroz was “It is the time for freedom and victory”, a call echoed by speakers and participants alike. The event highlighted the importance of unity among oppressed peoples and the pursuit of a modern democratic system as a new path to freedom and dignity. The event was enriched by the presence of political figures and messages from absent allies, including prominent activists and politicians such as Osman Baydemir and Sırrı Süreyya Önder.
Speakers from the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) and the Democratic Regions Party (DBP) in Urfa, as well as Ömer Öcalan, a deputy from the Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM), emphasised the role of dialogue and the recognition of Abdullah Öcalan’s efforts in the peace process. The celebration also paid tribute to the important role of women in the fight against oppression and the value of co-presidency in political representation.
Urfa’s rich history as a melting pot of civilisations, including Armenian, Assyrian, Arab and Turkish, has contributed to its diverse cultural tapestry. However, it is the Kurdish community’s resilience and advocacy for rights and recognition that has significantly shaped the region’s identity in recent decades. The celebration of Newroz in Urfa is not only a reflection of cultural pride, but also a demonstration of the Kurdish people’s ongoing struggle for democracy, recognition and equality.
