As hunger strikes continue in the prisons of Turkey, imprisoned former Democratic Regions Party (DBP) Sebahat Tuncel made a decision to participate in the hunger strikes launched to protest against the isolation imposed upon Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) leader Abdullah Öcalan.
Indefinite rotating hunger strikes of five days, launched by political prisoners of the PKK and The Kurdistan Free Life Party (PJAK) on November 27th to protest against the isolation imposed on Abdullah Öcalan, imprisoned in İmralı Island F-type High Security Prison, and the soaring violations of rights in Turkey’s prisons, continue.
The hunger strikes are carried out in groups and according to Mesopotamia Agency’s (MA) report, an imprisoned Kurdish politician, Sebahat Tuncel has decided to join the action of hunger strikes.
Sebahat Tuncel, former DBP co-chair and imprisoned in Kocaeli Kandıra No:1 F-type High Security Prison over four years ago, decided to join the ongoing hunger strikes and will participate in third section of the groups staging the strike.
It was also reported that Tuncel has also applied to be transferred to the İmralı prison island complex where Abdullah Öcalan is being held.
The strikes had begun November 27
Prisoners in Turkey had announced the beginning of their hunger strike via the weekly phone calls they made with their families on 27th November. They had also clarified details of how the hunger strike was being undertaken.
Each prisoner would take turns to go on a five-day hunger strike until their demands are met.
Former Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) deputy Çağlar Demirel, who is currently imprisoned in Kocaeli Kandıra F-type High Security Prison, had also launched a hunger strike.
Following the announcement of the hunger strikes, Kandıra F-type High Security Prison’s administration raided the wards of several political prisoners including Demirel and former HDP members and executives.
It was also revealed that prisoners who were on hunger strike have been subjected to mistreatment in Eskişehir H-type Closed Prison. Their wards were raided three times in one day.
